Wheels For Work

In 2003, then Governor George Pataki authorized 10 million dollars in grant funding to 33 agencies in 44 counties to operate “Wheels for Work” programs.

Through these programs, TANF-eligible participants can obtain vehicles necessary for transportation to and from employment (or other allowable work activites.)

Wheels for Work programs provide many transportation-related services, including support securing automobile insurance and vehicle registration, low cost car loans, driver education, donated vehicles, and repair assistance.

It is the goal of the program to ensure that each participant is provided the opportunity for successful employment through the elimination of transportation barriers. According to the NYS Department of Labor’s 2005 annual report more than 2,600 individuals were served state-wide in the preceding year.

In our area, the Wheels for Work Program has two “Project Sites.”
